An altercation on Sunday night led to the stabbing of San Diego Padres outfielder Tommy Pham.

Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune received statements from both Pham and the Padres that revealed the incident and Pham's subsequent recovery process. He is "currently in good condition" according to the Padres' statement and is "expected to make a full recovery."

According to sources who talked to Pham after the incident, the stabbing occurred after Pham left an establishment and strangers were engaged in an argument near his car. The stab wound pierced all three layers of skin but did not damage any organs. As noted by Troy Hirsch of Fox 5 Sports in San Diego, Pham has told reporter Jim Hayes that he had been stabbed before.

“I’d like to thank the incredible medical staff at UC San Diego Health for taking such great care of me last night,” Pham said in a statement released by the Padres. “I truly appreciate the hard work of the (San Diego Police Department) as well as they continue their search for the suspects. While it was a very traumatic and eye-opening experience for me, I’m on the road to recovery and I know I’ll be back to my offseason training routine in no time.”

Pham does not appear to know the suspects, according to San Diego police spokesman Lt. Shawn Takeuchi. The police department is actively investigating the incident.

Pham and the Padres were eliminated from the 2020 MLB postseason after falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS. Pham went 3-11 in the series after producing a strong stat line in the NL Wild Card series against the Cardinals (6-13, two doubles, two stolen bases). He spent earlier parts of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays.
