PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Penguins have signed defenseman Chad Ruhwedel to a one-year contract extension.

General Manager Jim Rutherford made the announcement on Friday afternoon.

The deal will keep Ruhwedel under Penguins control through the 2021-22 season.

He’ll make around $750,000 a year.

"Chad is a reliable, depth defenseman who is a great teammate," Rutherford said. "He keeps himself in great shape and is always game-ready, which is important for a player in his role and the success of our team."

The 30-year-old Ruhwedel played in 41 games last season with two goals and four assists and was a plus four.

Ruhwedel was signed as a free agent in July of 2016 and was a member of the 2017 Stanley Cup Champion Penguins.

He broke into the NHL after signing with the Buffalo Sabres as an undrafted free agent.

Ruhwedel has played in 137 games as a member of the Penguins.
