The Philadelphia Eagles and Jalen Hurts have agreed to a new massive contract extension worth $255 million over five years, making Hurts the highest paid player in NFL history in terms of average annual value, the Eagles announced on Monday.

Ian Rapoport reports the deal includes about $180 million in guarantees and a no-trade clause.

In terms of total amount of money, Hurts has the third highest contract in the NFL.

Hurts, 24, was the Eagles' second-round pick in 2020 and had one year left on his rookie deal and was scheduled to make a base salary of just $4.3 million in 2023 per Spotrac.com. The Eagles, however, took care of him, extending him through 2028, which is six more total seasons.

In two full seasons as the Eagles' starting QB, Hurts has a regular season record of 22-8 with 38 passing touchdowns and 23 rushing touchdowns.

Hurts broke out during the 2022 campaign, going 14-1 while throwing for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six interceptions and rushing for another 760 yards and 13 touchdowns earning him his first Pro Bowl and All-Pro (second-team) honors.

Hurts is 2-2 in four postseason games with four passing touchdowns, two interceptions, one fumble, and five rushing touchdowns, including his impressive Super Bowl debut where he accounted for 374 total yards and four total touchdowns in a 38-35 loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.

Howie Roseman and the Eagles were busy during the free-agency period, re-signing cornerbacks James Bradberry and Darius Slay, plus bringing veterans RB Boston Scott, DE Brandon Graham C Jason Kelce, and DT Fletcher Cox back on one-year deals.

Contrarily, the Eagles lost some key players like DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson, DT Javon Hargrave, LB TJ Edwards, S Marcus Epps, LB Kyzir White, OT Andre Dillard, and G Isaac Seumalo.

The Eagles added some new blood to offset some of their losses, signing free-agent RB Rashaad Penny, backup QB Marcus Mariota, DT Kentavius Street, LB Nicholas Morrow, and S Terrell Edmunds.

The Eagles have picks Nos. 10 and 30 in the first round of the NFL Draft later this month.
