PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) –Pat Narduzzi said he received a call Sunday morning that no parent, teacher or coach ever wants to get. The Pitt head coach found out freshman linebacker Mason Alexander had died Saturday night in a car accident in his hometown in Indiana.

Alexander graduated high school early to enroll at Pitt where he was going to be a defensive back. The freshman told reporters just this past Wednesday that he already had a special bond with the coaching staff, saying at Pitt they treat you like family with no fake love.

"Our entire program is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Mason Alexander's passing," Narduzzi said in a post on X. "Mason had just enrolled at Pitt in January following his early graduation from Indiana's Hamilton Southeastern High School. Even during that short time, he made a great impression on all of us. Mason was proud and excited to be a Panther, and we felt the same way about having him in our Pitt family. He will always be a Panther to us. The Alexander family and Mason's many loved ones and friends will be in our prayers."

Alexander said he had wished to play in the NFL one day and represent his Pitt coaches in the best way.
