Pitt Confirms The Passing Of Basketball Star Demetreus Gore

Pitt Athletics is mourning the sudden loss of one of its standout stars of the 1980s.

Demetreus Gore passed away over the weekend after reportedly suffering a heart attack while working out. He was only 54.

Teammate Charles Smith tweeted on Sunday about the passing of Gore saying he just spoke to him on Thursday.

Gore, a forward, was a 4-year starter for the Panthers between 1984-88 and had a career total of 1,555 pints, 394 rebounds, 300 assists and 126 steals in 122 games.

Gore was a member of one of the most talented Panther teams in history, making the NCAA Tournament three times and was also on the 1988 team that reach number 2 in the AP rankings.

Fore ranks 16th all-time in scoring at Pitt and is ninth in history with 645 career three pointers and is 10th in free throw percentage at .790.

A Michigan native, Gore was named the state’s Mr. Basketball in 1984.

Gore was drafted 42nd overall by Tulsa in the 1988 CBA Draft.

Current coach Jeff Capel tweeted, “Another brother gone too soon.”
