PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pitt fired offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti on Sunday. It comes a day after the season finale ending a two-year run in his second stint with the Panthers.
Pitt's offense was 114th in total yards this season and the same rank in scoring at barley 20 points a game (20.1) with only power Five schools Iowa, Nebraska, Arizona State and Michigan State below them. The stat that probably bothered run-first, Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi the most, the Panthers were 120th in rushing at 101.9 yards-per game.
In the two seasons he had back at Pitt, Cignetti had five different starting quarterbacks-Kedon Slovis, Nate Yarnell, Nick Patti, Phil Jurkovec and Christian Veilleux. This season he also had numerous injuries along the offensive line. Cignetti was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Panthers in 2009-10.
The Panthers will likely move quickly to find a new OC, even if it's not initially made public. The transfer cycle begins on December 4 and National Letter of Intent Day for college football is December 20.
