University of Pittsburgh Forward John Hugley IV has been announced as out for the remainder of the 2022-23 basketball season.
Associate Athletic Director of Strategic Communications for Panthers basketball, Matt Plizga, said that Hugley is seeking a redshirt year.

Hugley released in a statement on social media that his decision has come amidst both physical and mental struggles, “I want nothing more than to be on the court with my teammates, however… the best course of action will be for me to sit out the remainder of the season to fully invest in healing mentally as well as physically.”
He had his break out season last year with Pitt averaging 14.8 points and 7.9 rebounds over 32 games, which earned him an honorable mention All-ACC selection.
Hugley has only appeared in 8 games for the Panthers this season and hasn’t played since December 10th. Sophomore Federiko Federiko is expected to see a lot more time on the court, as he’s taken a larger role since Hugley last played.
“We are here to support John as he continues to learn to manage challenges in his personal life,” said Jeff Capel, the Panthers head coach. “John has worked hard to get to this point and should be applauded for seeking out the help to continue to grow as a young man.”
