Pitt football’s rushing leader in 2023 won’t be playing for the Panthers this season.
The program announced Friday afternoon that senior running back Rodney Hammond is ineligible for the season.
The news release from Pitt reads, in full:
Running back Rodney Hammond Jr. has been declared ineligible for 2024 season game competition. Hammond remains a member of the program and is permitted to practice with the team.
Hammond has 1,511 total career yards over three seasons with 14 touchdowns.
Last season, he had 547 yards (career high) with four touchdowns. His longest run of the season was 66 yards.
Western Carolina transfer Desmond Reid will now be the team’s starter, something Head Coach Pat Narduzzi announced Thursday.
Redshirt junior Derrick Davis will be behind Reid on the depth chart.
Davis transferred from LSU last year.
The Panthers begin the season on Saturday against the Kent State Golden Flashes at Acrisure Stadium.
Kickoff is at noon.
