PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – He was drafted as a returner, but injuries have forced the Steelers to adjust. Could rookie Kaeden Wetjen be an option on Sunday at Tampa?

“I’m very comfortable,” Wetjen said this week. “I typically stand with them the whole time and just makes sure I’m getting all the calls and just put myself in the game in case I get in the game.”

“We got a couple of guys down, probably going to step up a little the next couple weeks and hold down the fort for the guys.”

Wetjen hasn’t been a part of the offense. He doesn’t have a snap there in the regular season, rather spending his energies on returning kicks. He had three receptions in the preseason for 86 yards including a 74-yard gain. After that game head coach Mike McCarthy said he should have scored on that play.

“He hasn’t got a lot of work as far as our primary game plan, but he’s developing,” said Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy. “He’s out here every day working.”

How does he find time in a few practices to build some type of chemistry with Aaron Rodgers?

“Meeting time with him and talking with him about stuff,” Wetjen said. “That’s one thing that’s helped Germie a lot and with our meetings talking him through stuff, asking him what he wants and getting that from him. I definitely will have to do a little more of that coming up now, just looking forward to it.”

It might take a big play on special teams, where he is still working on setting up blocks, to give the offense the confidence to give him a run there. Wetjen came into the NFL with only 23 career college receptions.

At what point would the 5’9” rookie be called upon on offense?
