Penguins trade out of 7th round, end their 2020 draft

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) — While the Penguins had their final selection slated for the 211th overall pick, the team took things in a different direction.

Instead of taking another new player, the Pens traded with the Washington Capitals that effectively ended their draft for the year.

The Capitals traded back into the seventh-round and used their 2021 seventh-rounder to do so.

The 211th pick was initially gained by the Penguins earlier in the evening through a trade-down with the Avalanche.

So the Penguins gained a 2021 seventh-rounder, and the Capitals gained a 2020 seventh.

And with a loss of draft value, the Penguins conclude their 2020 draft.

But they'll have at least two seventh-rounders in 2021 — with a chance of a third if the Bjugstad trade condition works out in their favor.
