PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) Following the end of the 2021-22 NHL season, Pittsburgh Penguins veteran defenseman Kris Letang will be in need of a new contract.
According to Penguins general manager Ron Hextall, Letang is among the top priorities for free agent with the team.
Hextall did say that talks are ongoing but nothing more to report.
According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, the talks between the team and Letang are "far apart" on certain aspects.
Servalli went on to say the ask from Letang's camp is looking for a five-year deal and the price starts at $7 million.
The Penguins are reportedly not looking to give Letang that many years but should be willing to reach at least $7 million.
The Penguins may want to aim for a three-year deal rather than push it to five.
If the Penguins are able to get a shorter term, there is a good chance the AAV will reach above $8 million.
Letang's current cap hit sits at $7.25 million.
Despite being 35-years-old, Letang is in the midst of a great season and proving he can still be looked at as one of the top defenseman in the NHL.
