PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Penguins can't overcome 4-1 deficit in 6-3 loss to Red Wings.
The game began promising 53 seconds in when Evgeni Malkin scored the opening goal for the Penguins, but it went south fast when the Red Wings scored 4 unanswered.
"I just think Detroit's got a good team," said coach Mike Sullivan. "They play with a lot of pace, they push back a little bit."
The Penguins showed a lot of fight in the 3rd period outshooting the Red Wings 18 to 10, the only period in the game the Pens outshot Detroit.
Erik Karlsson scored his first goal as a Penguin cutting the lead to two for Detroit. About ten minutes later Bryan Rust scored his 4th goal of the season and just like that it was a one goal game.
The Penguins pulled Tristan Jarry from net with less than two minutes to play. Pittsburgh had the puck in Detroit's zone but a pass that went off Malkin's stick got away and Andrew Copp stole it and scored an empty netter making it 5-3 Detroit. Pittsburgh challenged that he was offside but there was no definitive angle to overturn the call.
20 seconds later Alex DeBrincat scored his second goal of the game and put the game away 6-3.
"I loved our push back in the third, we get it within a goal, we thought it was offside, they seemed to think it wasn't conclusive I guess, that could have given us a chance anyway," said Sullivan.
