The Pittsburgh Penguins say new safety measures are being taken to enhance player safety.
This comes following the death of former Penguins player Adam Johnson, who was tragically killed in a hockey-related accident in England.
The Penguins President of Business Operations, Kevin Acklin says that prompted them to act.
“We mandated the use of neck guards at are farm team level, in Wilkes-Barre as well as Wheeling,” Acklin told the Big K Morning Show. “Even thought this is a freak accident, you know the neck in hockey is presently unguarded at the professional, it’s all about player safety.”
His team, the Nottingham Panthers, called it a freak accident, but South Yorkshire Police said they are investigating and they don’t expect a result any time soon.
“It is likely the wider investigation will take some time,” police said.
On Monday, Johnson was honored by the Penguins and Anaheim Ducks before their game.
