Penguins trade winger Reilly Smith to Rangers

The Penguins are trading right winger Reilly Smith to the New York Rangers.

Pittsburgh gets a 2027 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick in exchange for Smith.

The Penguins also will cover about 25 percent of the $5 million Smith will make next season.

That gives the Pens some money to work with in free agency.

Smith’s time in Pittsburgh is largely forgettable. He played in 76 games for the Penguins last season and scored 13 goals and had 27 assists.

Smith was one of the first big names Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas signed before last year’s draft.

The Penguins acquired Smith through a trade last offseason from Vegas in exchange for a 2024 third-round pick.
