PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) Pittsburgh fans are as tough as they come.
Maybe a little too tough according to a new survey from Vegas Insider that looked at the NHL fan bases and their toughness.
According to the study, Pittsburgh Penguins fans are the 6th most likely fan base to start a fight.
To no one's surprise, cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers fans topped that list.
Pens fans are not only 6th in the league to start a fight, but also sixth to finish the fight and win.
Anyone who has been to a Penguins v. Flyers matchup (especially IN Philadelphia) knows that a fight is bound to happen at any moment between fans.
More than just the fan base, however, Penguins players and coaches are ranked among the toughest in the league.
The Penguins ranked 7th in the NHL for toughest players with Brian Boyle leading the pack as the player most likely to start a fight.
Boyle landed 9th in the league as the player most likely to start a fight.
Mike Sullivan, a former player himself, was ranked 3rd among NHL coaches as the most likely to win a fight.
The Sullivan stat is a little surprising since he beat out St. Louis Blues coach Craig Berube who was a tough guy when he played.
Berube recorded 3,149 career penalty minutes, good for 7th all-time.
Being a pesky fan base might not be the greatest stat to hang hats on, but it sure shows that people shouldn't mess with Pittsburgh.
