PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Hours ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline the Pens did make a move with a defenseman. Signing Mark Friedman to a two-year contract extension.

It is a one-way contract ending Friedman's days in the minors for $775,000 a year.

"Friedman is an impactful defenseman who has strong offensive instincts and plays with an edge," said Penguins GM Ron Hextall in a statement released by the team. "He's added depth to our defense corps and we are excited to see his continued development over the next two years."

The 26-year-old has cracked the lineup recently due to injury and head coach Mike Sullivan said he's earned playing time.  He has career-highs with four assists and five points in 20 games this season.  Friedman's only goal this year has been a game-winner.

Friedman was a third-round pick of the Flyers in 2014 and was claimed off waivers by the Pens from the Flyers in February of last year.  Both times Friedman acquired by Hextall.

Trade deadline is 3p on Monday and the Pens host Columbus on Tuesday.
