PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pens sign their first player this year without Pittsburgh ties. A one-year deal with 27-year-old forward Brock McGinn.
The left-winger spent his entire six-year career with Carolina after being their second round pick in 2012. McGinn played in 345 career NHL games with 51 goals and 55 assists and overall a minus 31. Last season, McGinn had eight goals and five assists in 37 games, battling injury through the last part of 2021 season.
McGinn will play special teams, a key member of one of the best penalty kill units in the NHL averaging over two minutes of ice time in 2021 with a shorthanded goal. He's known for his toughness, grittiness and ability to rise-up in big moments. The Ontario native has six goals and six assists in 34 career playoff games.
While likely a bottom six forward, McGinn could bring the intangibles lost when Seattle took Brandon Tanev in the NHL Expansion Draft.
