'Not the best' spicy pork and broccoli helps Domingue get it done for the Penguins

Penguins backup goaltender Louis Domingue didn’t expect to see any ice time on Tuesday night, during the first game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, so he had a meal.

In between the first and second overtime periods, Domingue said he had some spicy pork with broccoli. His review? “Not the best.”

But Domingue admitted that maybe the meal gave me the energy he needed to jump in cold during overtime.

He came in after starting goalie Casey DeSmith went down with a lower-body injury.

It was only Domingue’s third appearance ever for the Penguins after signing with the team last September.

It was Domingue’s second ever relief appearance in a NHL post-season game.  He stopped 17 shots including a couple of flurries by New York in OT.  In his previous playoff game, Domingue stopped seven of seven shots for the Golden Knights against Tampa Bay.

With the short benches at Madison Square Garden, Domingue was forced to sit alone where the Zamboni enters the ice.

After the game, Domingue said he wasn’t nervous and was able to quickly adjust, even coming in cold.

So add spicy pork and broccoli along with Domingue to the already long line of unexpected goalie heroes for the Penguins in the playoffs.
