Former Coach of the Year hired as Pirates Assistant Pitching Coach

The Pirates have hired 76-year-old Brent Strom as the organization’s new assistant pitching coach.

He’ll work with pitching coach Oscar Marin.

Strom pitched in the MLB between 1972-1977 and began coaching with the Houston Astros in 1996 and was also pitching coach for the Kansas City Royals and Arizona Diamondbacks.

He rejoined the Astros in 2014 as the pitching coach through 2021. He won a World Series with the Astros in 2017.

He was named Baseball America’s 2018 MLB Coach of the Year.

He announced his retirement after the 2021 World Series but joined the Diamondbacks soon after, serving as their pitching coach until he was fired this past offseason.

“Brent has a proven track record throughout his career of helping pitchers take the next step to being successful at the big league level,” said Pirates Manager Derek Shelton. “We are excited about what he will bring to our coaching staff as well as the talented group of pitchers that we already have on our staff right now.”

In total, Strom has been an MLB pitching coach for 14 total seasons and began coaching in Dodgers organization in 1981.
