Cherington says team is built to win as they look to improve before deadline

Does Ben Cherington believe this Pittsburgh Pirates team needs to make a move to improve or can they win with their current roster?

"Yes, and yes."

The Pirates General Manager spoke to reporters Wednesday just a week before the trade deadline.

Cherington didn't show any type of urgency and added the team has had the ability to make a deal, and could do so today if they wanted to.

But, he says they are going to make a deal that best helps the team, but that doesn't need they need to.

"We believe in the group," said Cherington. "Believe that we've shown, throughout the course of the season and also recently that we're capable of playing really good baseball and getting on a run, believe this group, without any changes, can get even better."

Cherington said that he thinks the team can be better because they are young and they have the players available in the minor leagues.

On the other hand, Cherington says they're looking to make the team better.

"I believe we have an obligation and a responsibility at this time of the year to try to improve the team, give the team an even better chance," said Cherington. "So, it's both."

Tuesday evening was one of the more frustrating losses with Paul Skenes giving up two runs and pitching into the 9th inning, but the Pirates still losing 2-1.

With the lack of offense, a concern at times, Cherington says one game doesn't trigger them to go out and make a move.

"We've been experiencing this thing all year . . . and we started this process several weeks ago kind of knew where we were as a team and how we were going to approach the deadline and as we've gotten closer to the deadline it really has become looking at the roster broadly."
