PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) While representing the Pittsburgh Pirates at the 2022 MLB All-Star game, pitcher David Bednar proved to be a man of many talents.
While taking press in Los Angeles, Bednar was approached by a reporter from SPOTV Japan and Bednar greeted him speaking Japanese.
The reporter was shocked to hear the language come from the mouth of a Pittsburgh native and asked if Yoshi Tsutsugo was the one who taught Bednar the language.
Bednar said he learned a little bit of the language from Osaka, Japan native and Los Angeles Dodgers legend Hideo Nomo.
Bednar also said that Nomo taught him how to throw his splitter.
According to PitcherList, Bednar has used the splitter 15% of the time and has picked up 12 strikeout with it.
Bednar said that when he met Tsutsugo he spoke some Japanese to him and he was also shocked to hear the unexpected talent.
The appeal of Bednar has grown beyond the Pittsburgh city limits and has reached overseas to Japan.
