PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes has a new wrist soreness and could miss the last few games of the season.

Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk said Hayes told them within the last 24 hours.  Tomczyk said it's not in the same area as his previous injury from April, however it is also with his left wrist.  Hayes wants to play, but the Pirates want 'to put Hayes in the best position short and long term'.

"It's a different location on his wrist," Tomczyk said.  "It's a different sensation.  In April, Hayes was dealing with more pain and true discomfort.  Here, this is more general wrist soreness.  We are working through his availability short and long term."

But it's the same wrist.  Isn't it all related because it's in the same area?

"It's the same anatomical region," Tomczyk explained.  "Meaning it's the same left wrist, but in a slightly different location.  Structurally there is nothing as of right now to do with anything ligamentous or boney or tendinous.  That is encouraging news that it is general soreness."

The Pirates have yet to place Hayes on injured reserve, nor limit what he can do in the off-season.  Tomczyk also said it's not a hamate bone injury.

Other injuries

·       RHP Luis Oviedo (right shoulder strain)-Tomczyk said he's been dealing with it for a little bit of time. It's in Oviedo's best interest to have a pause in throwing to have a normal off-season
·       RHP Connor Overton (right shoulder strain)-nothing too significant
·       RHP JT Brubaker (right shoulder inflammation) is playing catch on flat ground at 120 feet, but won't return this season. No reservations about his off-season program.
·       LHP Dillon Peters (lower back strain)-will start off-season work soon

Tomczyk also said he expects the limitations on pitch counts, innings, appearances, at bats due to the shortened MLB season and lack of minor league season in 2020 to last into next year and maybe 2023 as well.
