At only 19-years-old, Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin is married, has made it to the MLB and now has a $140 million contract that will keep him in Pittsburgh for nearly a decade.

Other than being the five-tool player, Griffin is respected for the maturity and kindness he has shown as a member of the Pirates organization since he was drafted 9th overall in the 2024 draft.

Konnor’s dad, Kevin Griffin, is a big part of that, but he told reporters Wednesday, his wife, Konnor’s mom Kim, is the real reason for that groundwork.

“We’ve always tried to instill in him that people will not always remember your stats and how you played and results of games and things like that but, they’re always going to remember how you made them feel,” said Kevin.

He added its important for his son to remain humble.

“If you do that then people respect you and good things will happen,” said Kevin.

As for the contract, Kevin said it’s “overwhelming” to think about the amount of money that Konnor has signed for it hasn’t really sunk in.

Kevin says signing the contract is an important step for his son, because he wants to be a Pirate for his entire career.

“He’s been around guys like Chipper Jones who said that it’s so special to be able to play in one place your whole career,” said Griffin. “I know this is the first nine of it and hopefully there’ll be more to come after that.”
