A light at the end of the tunnel for Pirates fans?
Cook & Joe’s Joe Starkey has been saying for awhile now that he can see the Pittsburgh Pirates winning the World Series in 2027.
MLB.com has chimed in with their predictions over the next ten year.
While the may next to wait another six years, MLB.com predicts a rematch of the 1971 and 1979 World Series’ with the Pirates taking on the Baltimore Orioles.
While the Orioles may be more established currently, they had the most wins in the American League last season and the third most in the league with 101, they have the Pirates beating the Orioles for the organization’s first world championship since 1979.
If it comes true, that would mean 50 years between World Series victories.
The Pirates continue to have one of the top 3 farm systems in the league and for the Pirates to be successful, they need their homegrown talent to turn into stars.
The Pirates currently have five players in the MLB top 100 for 2024, including right-handed pitcher Paul Skenes and three other pitchers.
Ke'Bryan Hayes and Bryan Reynolds will still be under contract.
With team payrolls ballooning to well over $200 million in a season, the Pirates have to rely on development and if in contention, using their farm system talent to trade for a missing piece heading down the stretch.
The Pirates can be successful, we’ve seen the Orioles do it, but with teams like Pittsburgh, if they made a mistake(s) it will take them years back.
If teams like the Dodgers or Yankees make a mistake or two, they can spend their way out of it.
Maybe it’s just because it’s the 50 years since the 1979 World Series, but a championship in 2029 would be nice.
Hopefully, the City of Pittsburgh sees one before then, but at this point, it isn’t looking good.
