After missing the past several weeks, Pirates infielders Colin Moran and Phillip Evans will begin their rehabilitation assignments Tuesday with Triple-A Indianapolis Indians.

Moran has been on the injured list since May 9 when he strained his left groin in a game against the Chicago Cubs.

Evans injured his left hamstring during a game against the Cincinnati Reds on May 12 and has been out since.

Pirates Director of Sports Medicine, Todd Tomczyk said last week that both players were doing work specific to their position and were progressing.

Moran and Evans are not the only players nearing return. Ke’Bryan Hayes could be activated this Thursday when the Miami Marlins come to town.

Hayes has been out since the second game of the season after suffering a wrist injury. He aggravated it on April 22, setting back his rehab.

The Pirates have understandably been very cautious with Hayes, who was in talks as a National League Rookie of the Year candidate.

The Pirates are currently 20-33 and in last place, 10.0 games out of first place in the NL Central, so getting Hayes and the other injured players back will be much welcomed new for the organization and fans.

In other roster moves, the Pirates optioned right handed pitcher Max Kranick from Double-A Altoona to Indy.
