PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – There have not been a ton of positives with the Pirates, especially recently, but they did get some relatively good news Tuesday.
Ke’Bryan Hayes remains day-to-day amid reports his season was over with a bruised right hand. Hayes missed two months after injuring his left wrist on April 3.
“Playing it and seeing where he is at,” said Pirates manager Derek Shelton. “Will re-evaluate him tomorrow (Wednesday) and see where he is at.”
Hayes left the game in the eighth inning on Sunday and Monday was an off-day. Hayes hitting just .223 with one home run in August. An early candidate for NL Rookie-of-the-Year, Hayes is batting .246 with 5 home runs, 16 doubles and 28 RBI this season in 281 at bats.
Chavis down and Park up
One of the promising players acquired in a recent trade goes on the injured list as another is recalled.
Michael Chavis came in the Red Sox trade for Austin Davis. Chavis goes on the injured list with a right elbow strain. While infielder Hoy Park, acquired in the Clay Holmes trade with the Yankees, returns to the majors.
“He had some imaging yesterday and we found it was nothing drastic or major,” Shelton said of Chavis’ strain. “It was more just the soreness and getting him back.”
Chavis only got five starts with the Pirates, but had eight hits in 22 at bats scoring four runs with a pair of doubles, a homer and two RBI.
Park had a hot start with the Pirates with extra base hits in his first three games. Totaled a six-game hitting streak including his first home run against JA Happ. The 25-year-old went hitless in his next 20 at bats and sent to AAA.
“I think just consistent at bats,” Shelton said of Park. “Maybe getting a little more grounded. When you are in the big leagues and teams start to make adjustments to you, sometimes you just need a little ability to catch your breath. That’s what we were able to give Hoy while he was down there.”
Potential Call-ups
While the roster only expands to 28 players this season in September instead of the traditional 40, Shelton confirmed infielder/outfielder Phillip Evans and pitchers Shelby Miller and Max Kranick are currently on the Taxi Squad. Each will likely, or at least have the best chance, to be added on Wednesday.
