After being designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Edward Olivares was unclaimed and outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Olivares has four years in the MLB, meaning he can reject the assignment and become a free agent.
Batting .224 with 23 RBI, .291 OBP and OPS of .624, Olivares likely will report to the Indians so he can receive the remainder of his $1.35 million 2024 salary.
Olivares came to Pittsburgh this past offseason in a trade with the Kansas City Royals.
With the Pirates trading to Bryan De La Cruz at the deadline, Olivares became more expendable.
Right now, it doesn’t look like there is much of a difference between the two.
De La Cruz is batting.097 over his last seven games over 30 at bats.
The Pirates have lost seven straight and look to stop the bleeding Monday night in San Diego.
The Pirates also recently released LHP Josh Walker a couple weeks after making a deal with the Mets for him.
Walker did not make any appearances for the Pirates.
