Pirates claim INF/OF off waivers from Miami, DFA pitcher Rainey

The Pirates have claimed an infielder/outfielder recently placed on waivers by the Miami Marlins.

Ronny Simon was picked up on Monday and optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.

To make room for Simon, right-handed pitcher Tanner Rainey has been designated for assignment.

Rainey has a 10.57 ERA over 11 games and 7.2 innings pitched this season for the Pirates.

Rainey faced five batters on Sunday against the Padres, walking three, giving up a hit and four runs, in a 6-4 come-from-behind San Diego win.

Simon, a rookie, was batting .234 over 19 games for Miami before he was DFA’ed

He has an OPS of .604 and is slugging .277 with 11 hits, two doubles, and five RBI.

Signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2018, Simon has a .266 career batting average in the minor leagues.

The Pirates have 40-men on their roster.
