Pirates hire bullpen coach with long history in organization

The Pirates have hired a new bullpen coach to replace Justin Meccage who was fired, along with hitting coach Andy Haines, just days after the end of the 2024 season.

Triple-A Indianapolis Indians Manager Miguel Perez will move up to the big league team as the new bullpen coach.

Perez had been the Indians manager since 2022.

Perez is a longtime member of the Pirates organization. He has coached as Single-A West Virginia, Double-A Altoona, and Triple-A Indianapolis.

He started managing with the Pirates rookie league in 2017, as well as, Single-A West Virginia in 2018, High-A Greensboro in 2019 and Double-A Altoona in 2021 before going to Indianapolis.

Perez also spent some time as a player in the Pirates organization over his 13-year career, only appearing in two big league games for the Cincinnati Reds in 2005.

“Miggy is one of the most highly respected members of our player development system who has not only had a meaningful impact on our players but also other managers and coaches throughout the organization,” said Pirates Manager Derek Shelton. “His passion for the organization along with all the other intangibles that he will bring to our staff and players is something that we are excited about at the big league level.”

Perez has also helped 30 players make it to the MLB, including Oneil Cruz, who said, “Miggy was a huge part of my development on different aspects of my career. I’m very happy to have him with us in the Majors this upcoming year.”
