Pirates land utility player Mark Mathias in deal with Rangers

The Pirates have made a trade with the Texas Rangers and have acquired infielder/outfielder Mark Mathias in exchange for a player to be named later.

The 28-year-old Mathias was designated for assignment last Friday, spending most of last season in the Rangers and Milwaukee Brewers farm system, also spending some time in majors.

He hit a combined .322 in Nashville and Round Rock last season with nine home runs, 10 doubles and 34 RBI.

Traded at the beginning of August by the Brewers to the Rangers, Mathias played in 30 games in the MLB with both Milwaukee and Texas.

He hit .277 in 24 games with the Rangers, with five home runs, three doubles and 16 RBI.

The utility player has played made appearances at six different positions in the big leagues, right field, left field, center field, second base, first base and third base.

To make room for Mathias on the team’s 40-man roster, the Pirates have moved right-handed pitcher Max Kranick to the 60-day injured list.
