PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Pirates final pick of the second day of the MLB Draft (10th round) is from Bethel Park.

Righty Justin Meis pitched at Eastern Michigan.  The 6'2", 160-pounder was 4-6 with a 4.64 ERA with 81 strikeouts to 33 walks in 73.2 innings.  Meis went 8 innings in March at NCAA champ Mississippi State giving up 3 runs in 8 innings striking out four.

Meis struck out a school record 16 in a game for the Black Hawks.

Here is a look at picks four through nine.

The first time this draft the Pirates took what some would consider a reach.  Right-handed Owen Kellington, a high school pitcher from Vermont, was not on the list of top 250 players before the draft went with the first pick in round four.

Kellington is 6'3", 193 pounds is the best player in Vermont and committed to UConn.

Jackson Glenn, a third baseman from 14th ranked Dallas Baptist, was the Pirates fifth round selection.  A rare 23-year-old in the draft, Glenn hit .361 with a .429 on-base percentage and 1.146 OPS in 2021.  The 5'11" infielder hit 19 doubles, 20 home runs with 30 walks to 33 strikeouts with 13 stolen bases.

Glenn, a right-hand hitter, stepped up this year against the better teams, going 6 for 12 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI against nationally ranked Indiana State.    Went 5 for 14 against Oregon State with a pair of doubles and RBI.  Glenn was 2 for 5 against TCU and 4 for 10 against Virginia with a pair of homers and 4 RBI.

In the 6th round, the Bucs got another fourth year senior in shortstop Mike Jarvis from San Diego State.  A right-hander Jarvis is also 23-years-old hitting .367 with 17 doubles, 5 home runs, 16 stolen bases in 46 games in 2021.

The 5'11", 180-pound Jarvis ended his college career on a 16-game hitting streak.  That equated to 32 of 68 at the plate with 20 runs scored.  The San Diego native had 29 multiple hit games in 2021.

San Diego State again for the Pirates in the 7th round.  Catcher Wyatt Hendrie is 5'11", 200 pounds hitting .379 while leading the team with 9 home runs and the conference with 57 RBI.  Also top-10 in the Mountain West in runs (53), hits (64), home runs (9), batting average (.379), on-base percentage (.464) and slugging percentage (.633).  Hendrie 15th in nation with 1.27 RBIs per game.  Had 20 RBI in his last dozen 2021games.

Hendrie, right-handed hitter, previously drafted in the 10th round by the Cubs out of high school and a 2021 Buster Posey Award National Semifinalist.

8th round the Pirates stayed out west, selecting right-hand pitcher Sean Sullivan.  The 6'1", 175-pound Sullivan is All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention going 4-5 with a 3.68 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 15 starts.  Sullivan had 8 starts of 6 innings or more and struck out at least 5 in 9 games.

Another teammate with the 9th round pick, this one of top pick Henry Davis.  Lefty-hitting outfielder Luke Brown selected out of Louisville.  He hit .320 in 2021 with no home runs, but 13 doubles, 4 triples and 17 stolen bases.

Brown, 5'10", 195-pounds, drafted by the Yankees in the 25th round out of high school in Kentucky.  His favorite team is the Reds and player is Tom Brady.
