Pirates make several roster moves on Tuesday

Six players' contracts selected for protection from Rule 5 draft

The Pirates made several roster moves on Tuesday afternoon releasing several players to make room to protect prospects from an upcoming Rule 5 draft.

Shortstop Cam Devanney was released. The Post-Gazette reports that Devanney will likely try to play in Japan.

Right-hand reliever Colin Holderman, second baseman Ronny Simon, left fielder Alexander Canario and right-hand pitcher Dauri Moreta have all been designated for assignment.

The Pirates also protected several players from an upcoming Rule 5 draft, adding them to the roster.

The Pirates also selected the contracts of the following players from the Altoona Curve:

Shortstop Jack Brannigan, outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez, left-hand pitcher Tyler Samaniego and right-hand pitchers Antwone Kelly and Wilber Dotel.

The Pirates also selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Brandan Bidois from the Indianapolis Indians.

Valdez is 15th in the Pirates farm system, according to MLB Pipeline. Brannigan is 21st in the system. Dotel is 28th.
