PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) The Pittsburgh Pirates suffer a crucial blow behind the dish as catcher Roberto Perez will undergo season-ending surgery on his hamstring.
The injury occurred for Perez on May 7 against the Cincinnati Reds and was originally placed on the 10-day injured list.
The veteran catcher was in the midst of his first season with the Pirates after playing his first eight years with the team formerly known as the Cleveland Indians.
Through 21 games with the Buccos, Perez was hitting .233 with 14 hits and a pair of homeruns.
To cover for the open roster spot, the Pirates signed Tyler Heineman off of waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.
29-year-old Michael Perez will also see more playing time at the catcher position.
