Pirates sign Montour grad & 3 power college bats from Draft

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Pirates signed a local and a trio of power-hitting college players as part of four inked from the MLB Draft on Thursday.

Montour High School graduate Dylan Mathiesen is now getting paid by his hometown team. The 5’10” right-hander had 84 strikeouts in 65.2 innings last year at Liberty University after starting his career at California University of Pennsylvania. He led the WPIAL in strikeouts as a senior at Montour and was the Post-Gazette’s 4A Player of the Year helping the Spartans to a state title.

Jared Jones holds the same name as a Pirates pitcher, but they couldn’t be more different except they both have power in their games. The LSU first-baseman was the ranked the number 101 prospect by MLB Pipeline hitting 22 home runs last year after 28 the previous season. He was a First Team All-American this season leading the SEC in RBI (76), second in total bases (171) and home runs (22) and third in hits. His nickname is Bear and pledged $100 to Make-A-Wish for every home run hit in 2025.

Arkansas third baseman Brent Iredale was also signed after having some of the highest exit velocities in Division 1 baseball last year. The right-hander hit .286 with 11 doubles, 14 home runs, 57 RBI and a .994 OPS in his only year with the Razorbacks. He hit 42 home runs in 113 games in two seasons at New Mexico Junior College. The Australian hit a two-run home run in the Little League World Series to send a game to extra innings against Panama. His nickname is Ironman.

The other player signed is third-round pick, catcher Easton Carmichael. Ranked as one of the most athletic catchers in the draft, Carmichael is Top 20 in University of Oklahoma history in hits (232), home runs (30), RBI (174), triples (13) and extra base hits (80). The Texas native is coming off a final season with 17 home runs, 62 RBI, 14 stolen bases and led the SEC with four triples. The right-handed hitter was named a First Team All-American catcher by Perfect Game & Third Team by Baseball America. Last year in the Cape Cod League hit .299/.372 on-base/.496 slugging/.868 OPS
