PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates have acquired another centerfielder to compete with Anthony Alford and Brian Goodwin for the starting job, first reported by Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic.
Lefty hitting and throwing Dustin Fowler designated for assignment recently by the A’s after not playing in the majors last season comes to the Bucs for cash. The 26-year-old is a former Yankees 18th round pick and was productive in 2019.
The mostly centerfielder played in 130 games in the albeit hitter-friendly AAA Pacific Coast League. He hit 25 homers (T-23rd in league) with 89 RBI (14th in league) and hit .277.
He’s played 70 games in the majors, hitting .224 with 6 HR and 23 RBI. All but one of those games with the A’s in 2018.
Fowler played all of the outfield positions in 2019, 89 games in center, 30 games in right and 6 in left. Finishing with a .988 fielding percentage with 6 outfield assists.
The Pirates announced on Wednesday that Alford is not yet ready to play in the field still recovering from his elbow injury and Goodwin joined the team just before camp started.
The Bucs first Spring Training game is Sunday.
