PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Bryan Reynolds and Ke'Bryan Hayes go back-to-back in Pirates 4-3 win in extras.
Just like on Friday night, it was complete domination by starting pitching. Martin Perez went 6 innings, 4 hits, 4 strikeouts, 1 unearned run. His opposition Jordan Hicks went 6 innings, 5 hits, 9 strikeouts and one earned run. The Pirates have 13 quality starts from starting pitching this season. They're in the top 5 in Major League Baseball in that category.
The Giants took advantage of a throwing error from Alika Williams in the bottom of the 6th inning. Wilmer Flores ripped a double to the outfield scoring the first run of the game. Pittsburgh would tie the game with a Rowdy Tellez sacrifice fly in the top of the 7th, scoring Connor Joe.
The game went to extra innings. After an Andrew McCutchen fly out, the Pirates would hit back-to-back home runs from Reynolds and Hayes to make it a 4-1 Pirates lead.
"Good swings. Taylor Rogers is probably one of the better left handers in the game," said Shelton. "Bryan got a breaking ball and hit it good and then Key flushed it. It was good to see, two big hits by guys we need big hits from."
In the bottom of the 10th, David Bednar pitched for the second night in a row. Jorge Soler greeted him with a leadoff 2-run blast, cutting the Bucs lead to 4-3. Bednar wouldn't let it rattle him as he struck out Michael Conforto the next at bat with a splitter low and inside. Thairo Estrada would single on a swinging bunt to third base, putting the tying run on first.
Bednar struck out Lamonte Wade Jr. with another splitter for out number two and fanned Mike Yastrzemzki with a 97 mph heater up and away to seal the win for the Pirates.
Pittsburgh looks to take the series Sunday when Jared Jones takes the mound against Keaton Winn. First pitch at 4:05 on the Fan.
