PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – What are the Pirates adding in the outfield after trading one of their potential starting pitchers?

The Bucs announced on Tuesday afternoon they moved right-handed pitcher Zach Thompson to the Toronto Blue Jays for outfielder Chavez Young.


Young is 25 and had the 'Best Outfield Arm' in the Toronto organization over the last three years according to Baseball America. He is a guy that could be your future centerfielder if by chance you trade your current centerfielder.

Overall in the minors last year, A and AAA ball the switch-hitter played in 70 games, hitting .237 with a .332 on-base percentage with six doubles, two triples, six home runs and 22 RBI with 21 stolen bases and caught only one time. Young had his best year in the minors in 2018 at Low A hitting .285 with 33 doubles and 58 stolen bases.

He can play any of the outfield positions and had his 2022 season interrupted twice by injury.

The 6'7" Thompson is 27 years-old going 3-10 with a 5.18 ERA in 29 games with the Pirates last year (22 starts). He gave up 19 home runs in 121.2 innings with a 1.512 WHIP. He has a key piece of the Jacob Stallings trade with Miami last offseason.
