UPDATE: Friday night's game has been rained out. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates manager Will Craig said he saw the Derek Shelton replay one time and equates it to a baseball error. Craig is in the lineup Friday night.

“He made a mistake,” Shelton said.  “That’s it.  You don’t option a guy because of the fact he made a mistake.  We make mistakes all the time in all realms of life.  We talked to him about it.  It just happened to be something that no one had ever seen before.”

Shelton noted Craig won a minor league gold glove a few years ago, that he talked to him.  He feels the best decision is to put him right back out there.

“There is no sense to dwell on it,” Shelton said.  “It’s just like if we kick a ball or give up a homer or we strike out with the bases loaded.  Things happen and we move on from it and continue to try and get better.”

“Javy (Baez) is a smart player.  If you watch him, he does a lot of things.  I don’t know if he did it on purpose thinking that play was going to happen.  If he did he’s way ahead of everything else.”

“He’s a heady baseball player.  We move forward.  Dwelling on that play really doesn’t do us any good.”

Shelton believes that play will be shown at all levels of baseball as an example of remembering the rules.  He again believes it was a once-in-a-lifetime situation and he will not punish Craig by benching him.

“Move on from it,” Shelton said.  “If we could all live our lives without making any mistakes, it would be really fun.  That doesn’t happen.  He’ll be back in there tonight.  We move on.”
