According to the New York Post, the Pirates shut down a proposed trade that would’ve sent pitcher Paul Skenes to the Yankees last year.
While Skenes struggled in his Opening Day start against the Mets, giving up five runs and only lasting. 0.2 of an inning, it’s only one game and the Cy Young Award-winner will bounce back.
The Post says the Yankees were willing to send their top four prospects to Pittsburgh in exchange for Skenes last year before the deadline.
But, reporter Jon Heyman says the Pirates didn’t even listen to the offer.
But, “expect the Yankees to circle back if they ever detect even a glimmer of an opening,” writes Heyman.
The players the Yankees reportedly offered is not known, but Heyman says it likely included “some combination of Cam Schlittler . . . George Lombard Jr., Spencer Jones and Carlos Lagrange, or possibly others.”
With uncertainty with how baseball will operate in 2027 and into the future, the Pirates, for now, don’t seem to be entertaining any type of deal for the defending Cy Young winner.
