Pittsburgh Public School To Allow Fall Sports

A resolution to delay sports in the city was voted down

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Pittsburgh Public School board voted on Wednesday to approve high school sports for the fall after a recommendation was made earlier in the month by Superintendent Dr. Anthony Hamlet.

Resolution 8.09 that would've delayed sports pass unanimously.

The move comes after the PIAA voted last week to move forward with fall sports, going against the recommendations of the Wolf Administration.

The WPIAL also last week released a statement along with the Allegheny Health Department that will allow high school football to move forward by having three "bubbles" during games.

Two bubbles will be the teams on the sidelines and the third players on the field.

Some board members expressed they changed their mind after talking to students and parents.

Another member said that sports are not required and that they can opt out if they want to.

If proper guidelines are not followed or an outbreak occurs sports could be shut down.

Karen Arnold, the district's athletic director said during the virtual meeting that she has no problem reminding players and even coaches to wear their masks.

Fall sports that would've been affected included Football, Cheerleading, Boys' Soccer, Girls' Soccer, Girls' Tennis, Girls' Volleyball, Cross Country, Golf and Field Hockey. The postponement will additionally affect marching band and band camps.
