3 things learned from our interview with Omar Khan

The next time we see the Steelers on the field will be during Training Camp in Latrobe next month.

FULL interview with Steelers GM Omar Khan

After the last day of mandatory mini camp at the team’s South Side facility, General Manager Omar Khan joined the PM Team and we learned a few things during his visit.

On declining Najee Harris’ 5th-year option:

Khan said it was strictly a business decision and that just because they didn’t pick up the fifth-year option, doesn’t mean he won’t be in black and gold into the future.

“I’d love to say that Najee was hear for a long career in Pittsburgh, he really represents us well on the field and off the field, but it was just one of those things that we needed to make a decision on,” said Khan. “Would love to have him here long-term.”

Khan said he’s keeping the conversation he had with Harris private, but that he knows the move doesn’t mean the end of his time in Pittsburgh.

The option would’ve cost the Steelers $6.5 million in guaranteed money.

On signing Sutton:

Khan said they decided to re-sign Cam Sutton because of their previous “positive” experiences with the cornerback.

Sutton was allegedly involved in a domestic incident with his girlfriend and was evading police. He eventually turned himself in. He faces a misdemeanor charge and a possible suspension by the NFL.

It was believed the Steelers may know how long they’d be without Sutton and that is why the signed him, but Khan says they don’t know that the NFL will do.

“Zero idea at all, that comes from New York,” said Khan saying the length of a possible suspension did not factor into signing him.

Fautanu at right:

Khan was asked straight up Chris Mueller, “Troy Fautanu will be a right tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers?”

“I would say that’s true,” said Khan about their 2024 first-round draft pick.

That doesn’t mean Dan Moore Jr. won’t start the season at tackle, but it looks like they want Broderick Jones at left and Fautanu at right in the long-term.
