Alex Highsmith apologizes for sack celebration on Sunday

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker was in the spotlight for the wrong reasons on Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns.

He received a lot of backlash for his sack celebration after taking down Deshaun Watson on the second-to-last play of the game.

After the sack Highsmith laid flat on his back while DeMarvin Leal came over and pretended to do fake chest compressions.

In light of the collapse Damar Hamlin suffered only six days ago and needing to be resuscitated on the field, a lot of fans weren't pleased with the showing on the field.

It's been a celebration the Steelers have been doing all season, but Highsmith acknowledged the response and backlash he received for it.

"I just want people to know that I have nothing but love for Damar and his family," Highsmith explained. "I just want people to know that there was nothing intentional about that. It was never planned, none of that."

He's a player that's highly respected within the organization as well, being a 2022 nominee for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.

"I just don't want people to think of me that way and think I was doing anything," Highsmith said. "Because I would never, ever, ever, ever want to do that intentionally, and I never ever would do that."
