Charges against Steelers CB Layne reduced

A felony charge against Steelers cornerback Justin Layne has been dropped to a lesser one.

Layne was arrested in Lake County, Ohio back on April 23. He was driving under suspension, speeding and had a loaded 9mm glock in the vehicle. He also had marijuana.

he Steelers released the following statement following the incident:

"We are aware of the incident but still gathering information. We will have no further comment at this time."

Two other men were with him in the car, but they were not charged.

The Willoughby News-Herald reports the fourth degree felony charge was reduced to a misdemeanor possession of criminal tools charge. He also plead guilty to charges of speeds and driving without an operator’s license, also misdemeanors.

Layne was given a six-month suspended jail sentence. That means he won’t serve any time if he finishes all of the terms of his sentence.

“Those terms are a $500 fine for the possession of criminal tools charge, the forfeiture of a Glock 9mm handgun, 6 months of community control sanctions, and 32 hours of community service. He was also required to take a gun safety course, which has already been completed,” the News-Herald reports.

He will also have to pay other fines.

Layne was a 3rd round pick of the Steelers in 2019 and appeared in all 16 games last season, accumulating 25 total tackles.

He is a native of Cleveland, Ohio.
