Faulkner to be OC, what to know about offensive staff

A look at those who will contribute to play-calling going forward

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – After the firing of offensive coordinator Matt Canada, now who will call the Steelers plays?

Reality is it will be group of people already on staff that will assume those responsibilities. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero first to report running backs coach Eddie Faulkner will take the title of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan will call plays.

Faulkner is in his fifth season with the Steelers coming from the college ranks where he was an offensive assistant and special teams coordinator at NC State. He also coached at Wisconsin, Northern Illinois and Ball State where he was offensive coordinator for two seasons (2009-10) and interim head coach at the end of his last year.

No NFL play-calling experience, but Faulkner is known with his running backs group for being innovative with their practice techniques. Always changing up drills and thinking up new ideas to change-up a typical practice.

Sullivan is in his third season with the Steelers, taking over as quarterbacks coach as Canada was moved to offensive coordinator. He's a 19-year veteran of the NFL and twice was offensive coordinator in the NFL, Tampa Bay (2012-2013, under Greg Schiano) and the Giants (2016-17, under Ben McAdoo and coached Eli Manning). He has also been an offensive assistant under Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville and then followed him to the Giants as a receivers, then quarterbacks coach. The 56-year-old was a quarterbacks coach in Denver in 2018 before joining the Steelers.

He is a Southern California Native who attended the United States Military Academy and among his college jobs was a defensive backs coach at Youngstown State, winning a national championship with Jim Tressel.

While never an offensive coordinator, offensive line coach Pat Meyer has 20 years of coaching experience including time with the Bears, Panthers, Chargers and Bills.

Receivers coach Frisman Jackson was the passing game coordinator in 2021 with the Carolina Panthers and at Temple (2015-16, back-to-back bowl appearances). He was previously their wide receivers coach and held that same job with the Tennessee Titans. He also worked at Baylor, NC State, Northern Illinois, Akron and Western Illinois. He played four years in the NFL with the Browns and his first three seasons at Northern Illinois he was a quarterback before transitioning to wide receiver.
