PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – An All-American long-snapper at Pitt, Cal Adomitis was able to walk into the indoor facility Friday and surprise some of his old coaches as the Panthers get ready for the Military Bowl. He wasn’t there to visit, rather he was wearing Steelers practice gear and getting set to practice with his new team.
Adomitis was signed by the Steelers, officially on Friday, just in case the knee injury to Christian Kuntz keeps him from being available to play Sunday in Detroit. The former Central Catholic HS star was going through a workout in Arizona on Thursday when he got the call from his agent. He got back to Pittsburgh late Thursday night and after passing his physicals, was out on the field.
“It’s part of being a pro and you learn how to be confident in what you do,” Adomitis said. “The nice part about my job, the terminology and schemes are pretty similar from place-to-place. So there’s not too much from that end that I have to re-learn.”
Practicing on adjoining fields during his college career, and playing such a niche position, Adomitis said he build relationships with the Steelers specialists. He’s known Chris Boswell for a long time, had met Corliss Waitmann and routinely spent offseasons with Kuntz, a Chartiers Valley HS alum.
“Throughout the summers, him and I are both here working out,” Adomitis said. “We are usually are own training partners in the summers with snapping. We were both laughing that it was a weird fever dream being out there, both in a Steelers uniform and practicing. It was definitely a funny day.”
He was the Bengals long-snapper for three seasons and spent the first nine games this year with the Eagles before he was released. Adomitis was the winner of the Mannelly Award as the best long-snapper in football while at Pitt and says he keeps perspective with this opportunity. If anything, his family is glad he’s home around the holidays, even if only for a short time.
