PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan)- The second half turnaround on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts is truly hard to explain. How did the Steelers go from looking totally inept on offense through the first 30 minutes of game time to scoring 21 unanswered points to win it?
Some reports say that the Colts defense knew what the Steelers were going to run, so Ben Roethlisberger went off script and called plays from the past to find success. Maybe it was as simple as finally hitting a deep ball and making the defense back off the short routes.
Former Steelers cornerback Bryant McFadden couldn’t quite explain it when he joined The Fan Morning Show Tuesday, but he does know one thing…
“It was gut checking time. Either you were going to lay down and just get hit in the mouth by the Indianapolis Colts and face all the criticism that was going to follow that ballgame or you were going to stand up, look yourself in the mirror and say, ‘Enough is enough. I’m tired of getting slapped in the face. It’s time for me to swing back.’
And they swung back. But they also connected with those swings. That’s the team that you want to see.
The thing about Pittsburgh…yeah, we don’t expect for you to go undefeated and win every ballgame, right? But you want to see people fighting.
You want to see people swinging back. You want to see people competing. In that losing skid, we weren’t seeing people swing. In the game of football, you’ve got to shoot your shot. You’ve got to swing. You can’t just stay there and lay down and take it. They fought back.”
McFadden not only liked the fight in the Steelers offense, but would also like them to keep doing one thing in particular.
“Man, forget huddling up. Stop huddling. Let’s go with an up-tempo vibe and let’s play with a sense of urgency. Speed up the tempo and just go.
Keep the defense on their heels.
Because of the inability to run the football, the best way to have success trying to generate rushing yards is to go fast. I think that should be something they should implement offensively. Forget the huddling. We’ve got an experienced quarterback. Big Ben can call his own plays. We don’t need to huddle.”
