PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) Almost half a century ago, one of the greatest moments in football, possibly sports history took place on Pittsburgh soil.
Anyone from Pittsburgh, or visited via Pittsburgh International Airport, knows the story of the Immaculate Reception.
Same goes for football fans everywhere; Everyone has seen the images and video of Pittsburgh Steelers running back Franco Harris scoop a deflected pass just before it hit the Three Rivers Stadium turf as he takes it into the end zone for a game winning touch down in the closing seconds.
It was on this date, Dec. 23, in 1972 that the catch occurred.
49 years later to the day, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto granted Harris the Key to the City of Pittsburgh.
The Immaculate Reception occurred during the rookie season of Harris's Hall of Fame career.
Beyond a catch that has gone down in history, and a Hall of Fame player, Peduto awarded Harris with the Key because of his work in the Pittsburgh community.
Since retiring from the gridiron, Harris has helped Pittsburgh in multiple ways including aiding with Pittsburgh Public School's Pittsburgh Promise.
Harris has also helped with the Heinz History Center, Heinz Endowments, and issued of food insecurity.
