Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers announced that his time in Pittsburgh will likely be a one-and-done. He'll play this coming season and then retire.
The four-time MVP said on The Pat McAfee Show Tuesday that “Yeah, I'm sure this is it, you know, that’s why we just did a one-year deal.”
Chris Mueller said, on his first day back from summer vacation, that Rodgers' words on McAfee have given him hope for the 2025 season with Rodgers as starting quarterback.
Muller thinks the Rodgers experiment has the potential to be more successful than the Russell Wilson or Justin Fields experience from last year.
“I really do think that this arrangement has a much better change at success . . . I think it has a better chance to work than the Wilson experience did,” said Mullsy.
Mullsy adds with Fields, Tomlin never really trusted the former Bears first-round pick.
With Wilson, “it never really worked because Mike Tomlin, the player, Arthur Smith and the player all butted heads, especially the offensive coordinator and the quarterback because the quarterback was a very special breed of kind of narcissist and image-obsessed PR guy,” said Mueller.
So, why will it be different with Rodgers?
“I actually think Aaron Rodgers is being sincere . . . when he says he wants to end with some good vibes, that being at a cornerstone franchise matters to him and that this is really it for him,” said Mueller. “He does not sound at all to me like either of the quarterbacks the Steelers had in that room last year, starting football games.”
With Fields, he was trying to find a fresh start and with that came urgency.
With Wilson, he was playing for another “monster deal.”
With Rodgers, he isn’t playing for his future and just wants to go out and play better than he did last year with the Jets.
Mueller also thinks that Rodgers is going to be a better teammate compared to Wilson.
