PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – When thinking about the NFL Draft last summer, Drew Allar’s name likely would be in the first-round pick mentions. Allar is now likely a Day 2 or Day 3 selection as the Penn State quarterback visits the Steelers per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Aside from likely top pick Fernando Mendoza, the Steelers have either had on the South Side, or talked at the NFL Combine, with most of the rest of the draft-able quarterbacks.
The strong-arm, 6’5”, 228-pound Allar was a five-star high school prospect and Honorable Mention All-Big Ten as a sophomore and junior. A broken ankle ended his senior season after completing 64.8% of his passes for 1,100 yards, eight touchdowns and three picks, rushing for 172 yards (36 carries) and a score in five-plus games.
NFL.com lauds his effortless ability to throw deep with ideal size who can make any throw, but struggled at times with ball placement. The biggest question teams have to answer with Allar is how much of Penn State’s struggles in big games were on him?
Pro Football Focus lists Allar as the fourth-best quarterback in the draft and the 96th player overall. PFF says he has the talent to play in any NFL offense, but needs to refine his game. His PFF grades have also gone down every season.
“Great guy,” said Penn State teammate Zakee Wheatley at the NFL Combine. “Anybody that knows Drew, knows he’s a leader, knows he’s a hard worker. Everybody loves Drew. I would do anything for him. I played with him the last four years. I always told him before every game, I got your back.”
