PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – There was someone other than Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders visiting the Steelers on Thursday. It's an All-ACC safety who was also a standout WPIAL wrestler at Peters Township High School.
Pitt safety Donovan McMillon just wants a shot.
"I've been overlooked," McMillion said. "People have questioned my athletic ability and my speed. I wanted to show that I'm athletic and quick."
He's likely to be a day three selection, but there are a number of Pitt defensive backs who are currently in the NFL, who have waited on draft day-Jordan Whitehead, Damar Hamlin, Dane Jackson, Damarri Mathis, Jason Pinnock, Avonte Maddox, AJ Woods, Brandon Hill. It's why McMillon came back home after starting his career at the University of Florida.
"Really the whole staff over the past two years have really tore me apart and put me back together to be the best possible safety I could be on the field," McMillon said.
McMillon believes he's taken advantage of the opportunities to learn from those players who are 'taking hard snaps' in the NFL. He feels he's versatile, even at 6'2", 205 pounds. That he could play safety, on the outside or in the slot.
"I've showed that I can go in the box and tackle big running backs," McMillon said. "I showed that I can cover receivers on the edge because in our defense we put ourselves in critical positions at all times. I've showed my intelligence on the field being able to make checks."
Along with visiting the Steelers, McMillon went to the Buffalo Bills as a local (meaning he doesn't count against the 30 maximum visits, same with the Steelers) and says he met with 23 teams leading up to his Pro Day in late March.
"Whatever team gets me, I'm going to put 100% effort and be great so we win football games," McMillon said.
"I've been dreaming about this my whole life."
